When was NIS2 put into effect?

The NIS2 Directive became effective on January 16, 2023, and EU member states are required to transpose it into their national laws by October 18, 2024. This transposition deadline means that each member state will incorporate the directive’s requirements into local regulations by this date. Several member countries were not able to hold this deadline. Each country may have specific timelines and grace periods for full compliance.

Who does NIS2 apply to?

NIS2 applies to medium and large entities in highly critical and other critical sectors. Highly critical sectors include energy, transport, banking, financial market infrastructures, healthcare, drinking water, wastewater, digital infrastructure, ICT services, and public administration. Other critical sectors include postal services, waste management, chemicals, food, manufacturing, digital providers, and research. Entities are essential if they have 250+ employees and/or €50M+ turnover, while important entities have 50+ employees and/or €10M+ turnover.

Does NIS2 apply to the UK?

Currently, NIS2 is an EU directive and does not apply to the UK. However, UK entities within EU supply chains may need to align with certain standards to meet client or partner compliance.

What does NIS2 stand for?

NIS2 stands for the second Network and Information Security Directive.
